How Much Does a Puerto Vallarta Trip Cost?
Puerto Vallarta scales from cheap to luxurious. Here's a realistic daily budget at three levels.
Puerto Vallarta can be a bargain or a splurge depending almost entirely on where you sleep and how you eat. These are honest daily ranges per person to plan around — not exact quotes, and always higher in the high season (Nov–Apr) and at Christmas and Easter.
| Per person / day | Budget | Comfortable | Higher-end |
|---|---|---|---|
| Accommodation | $25–45 (guesthouse, shared) | $70–140 (boutique / mid hotel) | $200+ (top hotels, all-inclusive) |
| Food & drink | $12–20 (stands, cooking) | $30–55 (mix of stands & restaurants) | $80+ (dining out, rooftops) |
| Transport | $2–5 (buses, walking) | $8–20 (taxis / Uber) | $25+ (private transfers) |
| Activities | $0–15 (beach, Malecón) | $30–70 (a tour every few days) | $90+ (premium tours daily) |
Where the money actually goes
The single biggest lever is accommodation — the gap between an Old Town guesthouse and a Hotel Zone resort dwarfs everything else. Food is where PV is genuinely cheap if you eat where locals do; it's only expensive if you eat every meal in tourist restaurants. Tours are the other big variable: one or two boat trips can equal several nights' accommodation.
Easy ways to spend less
- Stay in Zona Romántica and walk instead of taxiing.
- Eat at stands for lunch, restaurants for dinner.
- Use the local buses up and down the bay.
- Do the boat trips you can't self-organise; DIY the ones you can, like Yelapa.
- Travel in May or late October for high-season weather at low-season prices.
