San Sebastián del Oeste is a small colonial town in the mountains east of Puerto Vallarta. It grew rich on gold, silver and lead in the 17th and 18th centuries, emptied after the mines closed, and was left with cobbled streets, a stone church, old haciendas and about 600 inhabitants. Mexico named it a Pueblo Mágico in 2011. It's the classic mountain day trip from the coast: a winding drive into the mountains, coffee and raicilla tastings, and air several degrees cooler than the beach.

A short history

The town dates from the early 1600s — 1605 is the usual founding date, although Spanish settlement and the first mines in the area are older. By 1785 there were more than 25 mines working gold, silver and lead, and at its peak the district is said to have had around 20,000 people. The decline came with the Revolution; the mines closed around 1921. What survived is a town of colonial buildings and cobbled streets, now listed as a Pueblo Mágico.

Getting there

The road. From Puerto Vallarta, head north on Highway 200 and turn inland onto state highway 544, which climbs through Las Palmas and La Estancia de Landeros before the turn-off to the town. Allow 1 h 15 to 2 hours each way. It's a mountain road with tight bends: drive it in daylight, and in the rainy season, May to November, expect landslides — one stretch was closed for ten months after the 2017 rains. The state announced a MXN 271 million rehabilitation of 88 km of the road in January 2025, so roadworks are possible. In September 2026 an overturned tanker closed it temporarily near km 48.

By bus. There's no direct bus. Buses of Autotransportes Talpa–Mascota (ATM), from their station on Calle Lucerna in Colonia Versalles, run a few times a day towards Mascota; get off at the La Estancia junction and take a taxi the last 11 km or so into town. Check departure times at the station the day before, and the time of the last bus back.

On a tour. The easiest way for most visitors. Published 2026 prices:

What to see

Weather and what to bring

At about 1,400 m the town is noticeably cooler than the coast, especially early and late in the day; bring a sweater or light jacket even in summer. Rainfall is far higher than on the beach, around 1,190 mm a year in the municipality, most of it from May to November. Wear shoes that can handle cobbles and steep lanes. Bring cash: it's a small town, and you shouldn't count on card payments or cash machines.

Staying overnight

Most people visit in a day, but the drive is long. Hacienda Jalisco operates as a hotel, and booking sites list other small places in town. Staying the night also means you don't have to drive the mountain road back in the dark.

Safety: what to know in 2026

Jalisco is rated Level 3, "Reconsider travel", in the US State Department's advisory reissued in May 2026, while Puerto Vallarta and the neighbouring Riviera Nayarit carry no extra restrictions for US staff; see is Puerto Vallarta safe?. The mountain interior has seen more of the state's violence than the coast. In April 2015, 15 police officers were killed in an ambush on a road in this municipality. Earlier versions of the US advisory barred US government employees from highway 544 between Mascota and San Sebastián; local press reported in 2023 that this restriction had been lifted. And on 22 February 2026, during the unrest across Jalisco that followed the death of a cartel leader, the road was cut by trenches at the El Progreso bridge near La Estancia de Landeros; the army and navy reopened it three days later. The La Desembocada bridge on the same road, damaged that day, was rebuilt and reopened in May 2026.

None of this was aimed at visitors, and tours run normally, but it shapes how to go: travel in daylight, consider an organised tour, read the current advisory's Jalisco section before you set off, and if there's news of unrest, postpone.
