Sport Fishing in Puerto Vallarta
Banderas Bay is a genuine big-game fishery — marlin, sailfish, dorado and tuna.
Puerto Vallarta is one of Mexico's better sport-fishing destinations, with deep water close to shore and a real shot at big pelagic fish. Whether you're a serious angler or just want a morning on the water, there's a charter for it.
What you can catch
- Blue, black & striped marlin and sailfish — the headline catches, best offshore.
- Dorado (mahi-mahi), yellowfin tuna, roosterfish — common and hard-fighting.
- Peak billfish season is roughly late spring to autumn, though something bites year-round.
Types of charter
- Shared trips — cheapest, you share a boat with other anglers.
- Private charters — half or full day; full day reaches the offshore grounds (and the big fish).
- Panga trips — small-boat inshore fishing, good value for a few hours.
Good to know
The big marlin grounds are a few hours out, so serious billfishing needs a full-day private charter. For a fun morning, an inshore panga is plenty. Ask about licence, gear and whether catch-and-release or keeping your catch is the norm.

How long a trip do you need?
- 4 hours (inshore panga): stays in the bay. Roosterfish, jacks, snapper. Good value, good for beginners and kids.
- 8 hours: reaches the outer bay and the edge of blue water. A realistic shot at dorado and tuna.
- 10–12 hours: the offshore grounds, including the banks well out to sea. This is what serious billfishing requires.
The single most common disappointment is booking a half-day and expecting marlin. The big fish are hours away — if that's the goal, you need a full-day private charter.
Catch and release
Billfish — marlin and sailfish — are generally released, and good crews handle this carefully. Edible species like dorado and tuna are usually kept, and many charters will fillet your catch; some restaurants in town will cook it for you. Agree what happens to the fish before you leave the dock.
Practicalities
- Licences are normally arranged by the charter — confirm they're included.
- Departures are usually from Marina Vallarta, early.
- Bring sun protection, a hat, motion-sickness tablets, and cash to tip the crew.
- Shared trips cut the cost but you fish in rotation; private means the boat is yours.
