Getting out on Banderas Bay is the highlight of most Puerto Vallarta trips. But "boat tour" covers everything from a quiet snorkelling panga to a 100-person party catamaran — so match the boat to what you actually want.
The main types
- Marietas Islands — snorkelling and the Hidden Beach; small boats get more water time.
- Whale watching — December to March only.
- Los Arcos snorkelling — a protected marine park 20 minutes offshore.
- Sunset cruises — romantic sail or party boat.
- South-shore boats — to Yelapa, Las Ánimas and the south shore.
- Fishing charters — for sport fishing on the bay.
How to choose
Small boat for wildlife and snorkelling (more water time, closer views); big catamaran for comfort, toilets and a bar. Party boat only if you specifically want the party. Decide that first and the right tour picks itself.

Where boats leave from
Three main departure points, and they're far apart — check yours before booking:
- Los Muertos pier in Old Town — water taxis and many smaller tours.
- Marina Vallarta — most larger catamarans, fishing charters and the bigger operators.
- Boca de Tomatlán, south of town — the cheapest, quickest water taxis to the south shore.
Seasickness, honestly
The bay is usually calm in the morning and choppier by afternoon. If you're susceptible: take tablets before boarding, choose a larger boat, stay on deck looking at the horizon rather than below, and book the earliest departure. Sitting mid-boat is steadier than the bow.

- Reef-safe sunscreen, hat, sunglasses with a strap
- A light layer — it's cooler offshore than on the beach
