Puerto Vallarta Airport (PVR)
How the airport works, how to get from it to every part of the bay, and the arrivals-hall trap to walk straight past.
Puerto Vallarta's airport, Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International (PVR), sits 7.5 km north of the city, next to Marina Vallarta. It's the only airport for the whole of Banderas Bay, from Nuevo Vallarta and Bucerías to Punta Mita and Sayulita. It's small and easy to use, with one trap in the arrivals hall. The airport at a glance
| Codes | PVR (IATA), MMPR (ICAO) |
|---|---|
| Run by | Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP) |
| Where | 7.5 km north of Puerto Vallarta and 10 km from Nuevo Vallarta, on Highway 200 |
| Layout | Domestic gates in the main building; international gates in a separate satellite building, with the duty-free shops |
| Passengers | 6.9 million in 2025, more than half of them international |
| New terminal | Under construction; about 70% complete in May 2026, with the first gates due to open in phases from late 2026 into 2027 |
The airport in 2026
On 22 and 23 February 2026, unrest across Jalisco following the death of a cartel leader led to the cancellation of all international and most domestic flights at PVR. Flights resumed, but the year has been weak: Spirit Airlines stopped flying in May, and passenger numbers were 10 to 17% down on 2025 through the summer, according to GAP. What arrival looks like
- Immigration. Queues depend on how many flights have landed together; it's the slowest part of most arrivals.
- Baggage, then customs. A random-selection light: green means walk through, red means a bag check.
- The timeshare desks. Straight after international baggage claim come desks staffed by people offering a "free ride", a welcome drink, information or a free tour. They are timeshare sales desks, run by companies the airport itself lists as timeshare operators, not airport services or transport. Smile, say no and keep walking.
- Transport. The authorised taxi booths are in the arrivals hall; pre-booked drivers wait outside with name boards.
Getting from the airport
| Option | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Authorised airport taxi | Fixed by zone | Bought at an official booth in the arrivals hall; three companies operate from 8 am to 10 pm |
| Pre-booked transfer | Fixed, mid-range | The driver waits with your name; the easiest option with children or lots of luggage |
| Uber | Usually the cheapest door-to-door | Works, but pick-up at the terminal is still awkward; see below |
| City bus | A few pesos | No luggage space and a walk to the stop |
Authorised taxis
Three companies run the official taxis: Aeromovil, Aero TPV and Trip Vallarta. Fares are fixed per vehicle by zone. As an example, one of them, Aeromovil, lists 2026 sedan fares (up to three people) of US$27 to $46 depending on the zone, and US$51 to $90 for a van. Tell the booth where you're staying and pay the price on the ticket.
Uber
Uber operates in Puerto Vallarta, but pick-ups at the airport have long been disputed with the taxi unions. A court ruling in October 2025 allowed Uber to pick up and drop off at the Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta airports, though the ruling doesn't cover DiDi, and reports since suggest drivers still avoid the terminal. In practice, many travellers walk out of arrivals and cross the pedestrian bridge over Highway 200 to meet their driver on the other side. More in Uber and taxis.
The public bus
City buses stop by that same pedestrian bridge. Buses south to the centre stop on the airport side; buses north to Nuevo Vallarta and Bucerías stop across the road. The fare is a fraction of any other option, but there's no luggage space and the ride to Old Town is a long run of stops. With a backpack and no deadline it's perfectly doable; with two suitcases and a child, it isn't. See buses.
Hire cars
The main rental companies (National and Enterprise, Avis, Budget, Alamo, Dollar and Thrifty, Europcar, Firefly, Hertz and Mex) have desks in the arrivals hall. Ask whether the car is at the terminal or a shuttle ride away, and add the time when you return it. See car rental.
How long it takes, by area
| From PVR to | Typical drive |
|---|---|
| Marina Vallarta | 5–10 minutes |
| Hotel Zone | 10–15 minutes |
| Nuevo Vallarta (Nayarit) | 15–20 minutes |
| Downtown and the Malecón | 15–25 minutes |
| Zona Romántica and Los Muertos | 20–30 minutes |
| Bucerías | 20–30 minutes |
| Conchas Chinas and the south shore road | 25–40 minutes |
| Punta Mita | 40–50 minutes |
| Sayulita | 45–60 minutes |
Add time in high season and in the late afternoon, when the single coastal road through town slows considerably. If you're staying in Nayarit, pre-book: the distances are longer and taxi zones and app coverage get complicated across the state line.
Which option should you pick?
| Your situation | Take | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Couple, hand luggage, arriving in daylight | Uber | Cheapest, price fixed in the app; the walk over the bridge is short |
| Family with children and cases | Pre-booked transfer | Someone waiting with your name on a board, no negotiation, no queue with tired children |
| Arriving late at night | Authorised taxi or transfer | Bought inside at the official booth, no walking around with bags in the dark; the taxi booths close at 10 pm, so pre-book for a later landing |
| Solo, travelling light, on a budget | Uber, or the bus if you're game | The bus is a fraction of the price if you can carry everything on your lap |
| Group of four or more | Transfer or taxi van | Split between four, a fixed-price van beats separate rides |
| Staying in Nuevo Vallarta or further north | Pre-booked transfer | Crossing into Nayarit; taxi zones and app coverage get complicated |
A driver holding your name has one more advantage: it gives you a reason to walk straight past the timeshare desks without engaging.
Flying home
- Leave more time than the drive suggests. The check-in hall gets congested when several flights leave together, which in high season is most of the day. From Zona Romántica, setting off around three hours before an international departure is sensible.
- Lounges: GAP lists a domestic VIP lounge after security (8 am to 8 pm) and an international lounge between gates 8 and 10 (10 am to 7 pm).
- Parking costs MXN 50 an hour, up to MXN 450 a day.
- Returning a hire car? Add 20 minutes if your company uses an off-site lot.
Practical details
- Pay in pesos where you can. Prices quoted in dollars are usually converted at a rate that favours the seller; see money, cards and tipping.
- Use the ATM rather than the exchange counters in arrivals, whose rates are poor.
- Tip the driver a modest amount, more if they handle bags.
- Car seats aren't standard in taxis or transfers; arrange one when you book.
