Resort luxury
The upper-end resorts — many adults-only or all-inclusive — sit in the Hotel Zone, Marina and up the coast in Nuevo Vallarta and Punta Mita. Expect multiple restaurants, spas, beach clubs and full service. Best for a self-contained, indulgent week; see adults-only for the couples-focused options.
Boutique luxury
For character over scale, boutique hotels in Zona Romántica and the hillside of Conchas Chinas offer design, privacy and views over Banderas Bay — often adults-only, with a fraction of the rooms. You trade a mega-resort's facilities for walkability and the real city.

What actually justifies the price here
- The view. On a west-facing bay, an unobstructed sunset view is the single thing most worth paying for.
- Service ratio. A 20-room boutique gives attention a 400-room resort structurally cannot.
- Location. In Old Town you're paying to walk out into the best restaurant district in the city rather than book a taxi.
- Quiet. At the top end you're often buying separation — a cove, a hillside, an adults-only policy.
Boutique or resort? A simple test
Ask yourself where you'll eat dinner. If the answer is "at the hotel", book the resort — its restaurants and spa are what you're paying for. If the answer is "somewhere different every night", book boutique in Old Town; a resort's facilities will go unused while you pay for them.
When to book for the best rooms
The best suites and villas are few and go early. For the high season (November–April) book several months ahead; for Christmas, New Year and Easter, longer still. The green season (June–October) is when genuine luxury becomes affordable — the same room can cost a fraction, with warm sea and afternoon storms as the trade.
