Gay Puerto Vallarta

One of Latin America's leading LGBTQ+ destinations — and it's all walkable, in one neighbourhood.

Puerto Vallarta is widely considered the most LGBTQ+-friendly beach city in Mexico, and the scene is refreshingly concentrated: almost all of it is in Zona Romántica (Old Town), within a few walkable blocks. In 2026 the area is being formally designated Mexico's first LGBTQ+ friendly district.

Where the scene is

The heart of it runs along Lázaro Cárdenas and Olas Altas, a compact grid of bars, clubs, cabarets and restaurants. Because it's so concentrated, you can bar-hop on foot all night without a taxi — one of the things regulars love most about it (see our nightlife guide). The rest of the city — the Malecón, downtown, the day trips — is welcoming, but it is general tourism rather than part of the scene.

What kinds of venues there are

The scene is unusually complete for a city this size:

Beach clubs at the southern end of Playa Los Muertos, the main gay beach, near the pier — loungers, food and drink service, music through the afternoon. The daytime counterpart to the night-time bar scene a couple of blocks inland.
Cabaret and drag venues, a genuine Vallarta speciality with a professional circuit and a high standard; most run two shows a night in high season.
Bars of every kind — quiet terraces, cantinas, sports bars, leather and bear bars, and the big multi-floor places on Lázaro Cárdenas.
Clubs that fill after midnight and run very late.
Pool parties, mostly hotel-hosted, concentrated in high season and around Pride.
Restaurants that are simply part of the scene rather than separate from it — see where to eat in Old Town.

Where to stay

Zona Romántica has a range of gay-owned and gay-popular hotels, from boutique properties to adults-only and men-only stays, all within walking distance of the bars and beach. Staying in Old Town puts you in the middle of everything. The appeal isn't just that Puerto Vallarta is gay-friendly — it's that the whole scene fits in one relaxed, walkable neighbourhood by the beach.

The calendar

When	What it's like
November–April	High season. Everything open, everything busy, best weather, highest prices.
Late May	Vallarta Pride — the peak week. Book months ahead.
June–October	Green season. Hot, humid, afternoon rain; quieter, cheaper, more local. The scene stays open.
Late December	Christmas and New Year — the single most expensive fortnight of the year.

Practical notes

Same-sex marriage is legal throughout Mexico, and Puerto Vallarta is a long-established destination where visible same-sex couples are entirely unremarkable in Old Town.
Outside the tourist areas, and in smaller towns up and down the coast, attitudes are more conservative — not hostile, but the easy visibility of Old Town is not universal.
The ordinary precautions apply, as in any nightlife district: watch your drink, keep valuables close, and use taxis or Uber for anything beyond walking distance. See is it safe?
The women's scene is much smaller than the men's, and centres on a handful of bars and the beach rather than a distinct circuit.
