Puerto Vallarta vs Cancún

A Pacific town between mountains and sea, or a Caribbean resort strip near the Mayan world? An honest comparison — from a Puerto Vallarta guide.

Puerto Vallarta and Cancún are Mexico's two most famous beach destinations, and they could hardly be more different. One is a Pacific town with a cobbled old centre, squeezed between jungle-covered mountains and a deep bay; the other is a resort strip built out into the Caribbean, an hour or two from Mayan ruins and cenotes. We're a Puerto Vallarta guide, so read this with that in mind — but every figure below comes from the sources listed at the end, and on several counts Cancún comes out ahead.

The feel of the place

Puerto Vallarta is a real town that grew into a resort. Its centre — the Malecón, the crowned church, Isla Cuale and the cobbled lanes of Zona Romántica — is walkable, full of independent restaurants and lived in. Resorts line the bay to the north, in the Hotel Zone and Nuevo Vallarta, and the mountains rise straight behind.

Cancún is built around its Hotel Zone, a strip of large resorts between the Caribbean and a lagoon, with the city itself on the mainland. It's bigger, flatter and more resort-driven, and the region is huge: the Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen and Tulum continue down the coast.

Beaches and water

Cancún has the edge for the classic image: Caribbean water, a touch warmer in winter (about 26 °C from January to March, against 24 °C in Banderas Bay). Puerto Vallarta's beaches range from the lively city sand of Los Muertos to coves you reach only by boat; some face open Pacific swell, so the flags matter (beaches).

Sargassum is the big difference in 2026. The brown seaweed that drifts across the Atlantic has become, in the words of Mexico's environment secretary, "long and continuous" rather than seasonal on the Caribbean coast. At its peak in 2026 about 90,500 tonnes a day were floating off the Mexican Caribbean — 27 times the historical average — and about a tenth of it washes ashore. By 1 October, Quintana Roo had collected about 138,000 tonnes in 2026, against about 92,800 in the whole of 2025, with arrivals starting in January and still coming in October. Satellite monitoring by the University of South Florida expected beaching to ease, but continue, until about November. Mexico is spending MXN 2 billion on clearing it. The Pacific coast isn't affected.

Weather and hurricanes

Both are dry and sunny from about November to April. The rains come at different times: in Puerto Vallarta they're concentrated from June to September — July and September are the wettest — while Cancún's peak later, from late August to November, with October the wettest month. February to April see almost no rain in Puerto Vallarta. See Puerto Vallarta weather.

Both coasts get hurricanes. In July 2024, Hurricane Beryl came ashore near Tulum as a category 1 storm, cutting power to about 433,000 people and cancelling more than 300 flights. On the Pacific side, Hurricane Nora in 2021 brought down a bridge over the Río Cuale, and Lidia, a category 4 storm, made landfall south of Puerto Vallarta in October 2023, closing the airport for a day. If you travel between June and November, buy insurance that covers storms.

Getting there

Cancún is far better connected. Its airport handled 29.3 million passengers in 2025, against 6.9 million at Puerto Vallarta. From Europe, Cancún has year-round non-stop flights from London, Paris, Madrid, Frankfurt, Zurich, Amsterdam, Istanbul, Milan and Rome, plus many seasonal charters; Puerto Vallarta has no scheduled non-stop flight from Europe this winter — TUI's UK flights were reported paused until 2027 at the earliest — so most Europeans connect through a US hub. From the US and Canada both are well served — Cancún from roughly 30 US cities year-round, Puerto Vallarta from about 16 US cities year-round, more in winter, and a long list of seasonal Canadian routes. If Mayan history is on your list, Cancún wins outright: there are no comparable ruins near Puerto Vallarta. If you want mountains, jungle and a town to wander, it's the other way round.

Safety

The US State Department rates Mexico as a whole at Level 2, "exercise increased caution" (reissued in May 2026). By state, Quintana Roo is at Level 2, with advice to be alert after dark in downtown Cancún, Tulum and Playa del Carmen. Jalisco is at Level 3, "reconsider travel", but the advisory places no restrictions on Puerto Vallarta or the neighbouring Riviera Nayarit; Nayarit itself is at Level 2.

Neither has been free of incidents. In February 2026, unrest across Jalisco after the death of a cartel leader led to a brief shelter-in-place in Puerto Vallarta and cancelled flights; order returned within days, though hotel occupancy dipped in the following weeks. In October 2024 a targeted shooting near a resort in Cancún's Hotel Zone killed one man; no guests were hurt. Cost and crowds

We found no reliable index comparing hotel prices in the two. Both price largely in US dollars and both have high occupancy — about 71–72% across their monitored hotels in 2025. Cancún is the bigger machine: Quintana Roo received more than 20 million tourists in 2025, against about 6.3 million in Puerto Vallarta, two-thirds of them Mexican. Puerto Vallarta's old town has plenty of small, independent places to stay and eat outside the resorts; see what a trip costs and where to stay.

Frequently asked

Is Puerto Vallarta or Cancún better?

It depends on what you want. Puerto Vallarta has a walkable old town, mountains, humpback whales in winter and no sargassum; Cancún has far more flights, especially from Europe, Mayan ruins and cenotes nearby, and slightly warmer water in winter.

Does Puerto Vallarta have sargassum?

No. Sargassum is an Atlantic and Caribbean problem; it has hit Cancún and the Riviera Maya hard in 2025 and 2026, but it is not a feature of the Pacific coast.

Which is safer, Puerto Vallarta or Cancún?

The US advisory rates Quintana Roo at Level 2 and Jalisco at Level 3, but places no restrictions on Puerto Vallarta or the Riviera Nayarit. Both have had incidents; check your government's current advice before booking.

Which has better weather in winter?

Both are dry and sunny from about November to April. Cancún's sea is a little warmer in January to March, about 26 °C against 24 °C in Banderas Bay.
