3 Days in Puerto Vallarta
A long weekend that still hits the highlights — town, water and beach.
Three days is enough for a proper taste of Puerto Vallarta if you don't over-plan. This itinerary keeps you based in Old Town so you walk more and taxi less.
Day 1 — Old Town & the Malecón
Settle into Zona Romántica. Walk the Malecón in the late afternoon, watch the sunset from the seawall, and have dinner on Basilio Badillo. Ease in — you're on Vallarta time now.
Day 2 — Out on the water
Do the trip you can't do from shore: Marietas Islands snorkelling, or whale watching if it's December–March. Back in time for a rooftop drink and a night out if you've the energy.
Day 3 — Beach & slow morning
A relaxed morning on Playa Los Muertos, ceviche on the sand, maybe a last stroll and some shopping before you leave. If you'd rather escape the crowds, the coves at Conchas Chinas are a short ride south.
Short on time? Don't try to add a far day trip — three days is better spent going deep on the city than rushing up the coast.
Where to base yourself for three days
With only three days, location does more work than anything else. Stay in Zona Romántica: you'll walk to the beach, to dinner and to the Malecón, and you won't lose an hour a day in taxis. A resort in the Hotel Zone is a false economy on a short trip — every evening becomes a journey.
What to book before you arrive
- Your one boat trip. With three days you get one, so make it count and book it ahead — especially whale watching in December–March.
- The airport transfer, so you're not negotiating on arrival. See airport to Old Town.
- Nothing else. Restaurants and beach days don't need booking.

What to leave out
Three days is not enough for Sayulita or Bucerías — you'd spend a third of your trip travelling. Skip the full-day adventure parks too. Go deep on the city rather than wide on the region; the coast will still be there next time.
If your three days include a cruise stop
Cruise passengers dock near Marina Vallarta, well north of Old Town. With a single day ashore, either take a ship-timed boat excursion, or taxi straight to the Malecón and Old Town and spend the day walking, eating and on the beach. Don't attempt both.
Getting the most from a short trip
Three days gives you roughly two and a half usable days once flights are accounted for, so the planning question isn't "what can I fit in" but "what do I cut". Three principles make the difference:
- Don't move hotels. A second check-in costs half a day.
- Don't cross the bay twice. One boat trip, not two.
- Eat where you're staying. Old Town's density means you never need to travel for a good meal — that alone saves hours over three days.
Adjusting for your arrival time
Morning arrival: you effectively gain a day — move the boat trip to day 2 and use day 1 afternoon for the beach. Evening arrival: day 1 is dinner and a walk, nothing more; shift everything back and accept you'll do one thing less. Late departure on day 3: a final morning at Conchas Chinas is a better use of it than shopping.
Three days by season
- December–March: make the boat day whale watching. It's the one thing unavailable the rest of the year, and it's the memory people keep.
- April–May: conditions are excellent and crowds thinner — a good window for a short trip.
- June–October: front-load each day. Do the boat trip and the beach in the morning; treat the late afternoon as indoor time.
What three days costs
The big variables are the same as on any trip here — where you sleep and whether you book an organised excursion. A short stay in an Old Town guesthouse, eating at stands and doing one group boat trip, is a genuinely inexpensive long weekend.
